Down and about Sentinel Peak

Day 10, part 2: Cleaned up, beating the lightning down the mountain, dinner. We sat out under the stars that night, talking about life, future, books we're reading, God, and prayer.

Here's the right waterfall!

Slow frame shot.

Don't fall man, it's a long way down.

Here's a good view

The water, flowing

And frozen.

flowing

flowing water into the pool where we got clean. Man, this water is frigid!

Nick gettin' clean.

Zach's out. that water just about sent him into hypothermia. Not really.

I've got an awesome farmer's boy tan, no?

At the very bottom, you can see that Nick has jumped in.

Nick is screaming about it being cold about now. The trick is to get your business done quickly and get out, b/c the water temperature sends you into the shakes quick, then you can't climb out of the slippery pool.

David, getting dry.

I think David thinks he should have been on "Survivor."

Somebody wanted a picture of Nick's goosebumps, so...

So after getting cleaned up, I unpacked the lunch stuff and started to make sandwiches. Out of nowhere a lightning and rain storm came on us. The rain and air was really cold, and the thunder and lightning was a bit alarming on that plateau, so we packed up, put on our jackets, and headed back down. It was a cold hike now. At the ladders things were quite interesting because the rain made them slippery and the wind was fierce. It felt like it was pretty dangerous anyway, being on those steel ladders! We made it down those and hiked down quickly, and after about 20 minutes or so we had sunshine again. We hiked on back in about an hour. Unfortunately no pictures in the rain :)

We gave some eggs to the local that ran the camping area. He persuaded us to sleep in the shelter that night instead of using the tent. we also got to talk with two SA college students, and we gave them the rest of our heat-needed food, after our soup/rice/vegetable curry dinner because they were really short on their rations.

Lovely carpet mountains.

Before dinner I climbed up the short rock wall that was made when they carved out the road to the camping area. On top of that hill was a nice view of the other side, and I also wanted to get up to the cell phone tower so that I could SMS Anton a question. Along the way my feet went out from under me. With my camera in one hand and my journal in the other, I took the fall on my hip to avoid damaging the camera. Only a small gash...

Ingenous setup. Because the hill is so high, a short tower is all that's needed. Wind and solar sells power the batteries inside that closet.I'm about as tall as that closet.

Green carpets

Me, timershot with the camera. Unfortunately out of focus.

Again, out of focus and zoom.

Nick, starting up dinner.
