From Krueger to the Drakensburg

Day 9, Part 2: This is the picture story of our drive from Krueger to the Drakensburg. There's lots of scenic sunset pictures, so please be patient! At the bottom is a lot of the details of our interesting change of plans that night.

The drive to the Drakensburg mountains was very scenic. Along the way we ate at Nandos, bought food for camping, and otherwise had an interesting drive.

Lots of mountain passes and slow-moving vehicles to pass. Nick did well.

Are we in Ireland?

Never a flat moment.

The natives still live together, surely a result of Apartheid. This is possibly the nicest-looking black community I saw.

Amazing clouds along the way

A mosque. Once you've seen a lot of these, they're easy to spot. There's probably one in your home town.

God turned on the flashlight.

It was raining over there as well

RAIN

I know there's a bunch of these, but I had a hard time deleting any of them!

After driving all day Nick asked for relief, so I took over. As we got closer and day became pitch-black night, it got interesting. On the way to the mountains, the blacks would stand out in the road and try to wave you down for either a ride or to mug you?. It was scary just avoiding them. As we got into the mountains and to the drive up the mountain itself, we found ourselves driving thru fog - thru a cloud actually. For about an hour it seemed we drove up, up, up - and turned every which way - as we snaked around the cliff drive. We couldn't tell what was past the road on either side, nor what was more than 10 feet in front of us, but we knew cliffs were on either side. It was also very windy, so it made for an eerie yet fun drive and I enjoyed it much.

At the top we found that the camping area was heavily gated, with a barbed wire and razor fence. And it was already locked up for the night! We sat in the car for a while debating what to do, considering the circumstances. After a while we determined we had to pitch camp right there, and didn't worry too much about being mugged or mauled way up there - besides, Nick and I wouldn't have slept well in the car.

Our lights helped to illuminate things, somewhat...

Maybe not that much...

The fog did start to let up at the very top. David has something cool on his ankle!

It's a moth! There were tons of these big guys, and they ate up some of my clothes.

Raising the tent.
